Since 1927 Key Club has been contributing service hours across the world. Key Club is an organization enabling students to serve and volunteer in their communities through schools’ local Key Club chapters. Key Club was founded in Sacramento, California in 1927 by 11 charter members who wanted to create a service club in their high school. This idea would eventually spread to all parts of the country including Florida, New York, Texas, and there are now over 125,000 members around the United States alone. This number continues to grow throughout the world too. Key Club expanded to an international level when founded in the Bahamas in 1967, followed by nations such as The Philippines and South Korea. Key Club has now spread to 40 different countries around the world, diverse communities brought together through their desire to volunteer and serve.
A vital part of Key Club’s work is service events, which can span from working at food pantries or fundraisers for various initiatives. For example, Ohio’s Canton South High School’s Key Club set out to resolve pollution in their area by placing more trash cans in the area to decrease littering.
Key club is also student-led by nature. During meetings, students design service projects and inform members about upcoming events. Additionally, Key Club International has a student president who organizes and plans objectives for Key Club as a whole. Key Club’s current president is David Robania from the Southwest District, and he strives to increase connections and strengthen student leadership in Key Clubs across America. An important role, Robania was required to run, campaign, and be elected to presidency, alongside following duties and responsibilities from a weekly, monthly, and annual checklist.
Key Club’s work is represented through four core values: leadership, character-building, compassion, and inclusion. Key Club teaches students leadership skills through service projects. It allows people to listen and entrust others. Key club builds character through small and large acts of kindness. It helps grow a stronger bond within the communities, providing an opportunity for students to show more compassion and empathy towards others. Finally, Key Club is welcoming to people of all backgrounds, facilitating a more inclusive and accepting society. Not only do these four values embody Key Club members, but also the connections they form with each other and their communities.
All in all, Key Club is a great way to help and bond with the community and build useful life skills.
