On October 3rd, 2024, Brookfield Central High School hosted a “Miracle Minute” as a means of supporting those affected by the tragedy that was Hurricane Helen. During the first minute of 2nd block, executive board members of BC’s Key Club raced through the hallways and collected donations from students and staff.
In its pledge, Key Club International upholds values of community and togetherness, especially in times of conflict—in its last line, stating Key Club exists to “combat all forces that tend to undermine” various communities and institutions. Not only does Brookfield Central’s Key Club strive to give back to the local community in its 10,000 service hour goal, it is also a primary objective to serve in times of crisis.
The Miracle Minute is an exemplification of such values. Although the BC Key Club has initiated many fundraisers in the past including the Dance Marathon and Relay for Life, contributing thousands of dollars for the Children’s Miracle Network and American Cancer Society, respectively, the “Miracle Minute” is unique in nature. By involving all of BC, funds are raised far more effectively.
While the donation of a dollar may seem insignificant, when coupled with contributions of 1000+ Lancers, massive results are yielded. In total, Brookfield Central raised $1784.06 in just one minute. Even more, an anonymous donor was generous enough to match the Miracle Minute donation, leading to a cumulative sum of $3014.
Donations, such as that of Key Club’s, have been extremely impactful in facilitating the Red Cross’s efforts, which is an organization that has been instrumental in providing disaster relief to those impacted by the hurricane. Their efforts include distributing supplies, offering shelter, and access to medical care in affected regions.
All in all, the BC Key Club is extremely happy with the outcome of the Miracle Minute. It is a reminder of BC’s strong commitment to service and giving back. Arnav Nandakumar, treasurer of the BC Key Club and a vital member of the Miracle Minute’s execution cites much of its success as strong advertisement and communication between students, administration, and parents. “It was heartwarming to see the support for others hat our school was able to give.”
