Who is your hero?
To start, I would like to explain my vision of a hero. I strongly believe that heroes live the hardest lives. Heroes are people supporters, not pleasers. A hero is someone who will help you through your struggles while battling their own. Their opinions are balanced toward the positive side of things and they are never searching for negatives. Joseph Campbell once said, “a hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.” I agree with this statement, whether that bigger thing is religion, personal values, future goals, etc; it is so great to have something to chase after.
Recently, I’ve been thinking a lot about who I look up to in life. Therefore, this article will be based on my experiences and opinions. However, I hope you can find a hero in these people too! This paper will include multiple heroes found in our school, including adults, Hope Squad members, and other friends of mine! My local heroes are:
Officer Kader
You might think I mention Officer Kader as one of my heroes because he is a part of law enforcement. While that is a part of the reason, I mention him because he is a very important part of my life. A while ago, we (ironically) talked about talking. We had agreed that just talking can make you feel so much better about a situation–whether that’s to someone else, yourself, or a religious figure. Personally, I find it difficult to stand up for myself or talk about my feelings to someone else. I find peace in either journaling or prayer, but I find it especially good to talk to another person.
Mr. Fuchs
Mr. Fuchs is hilarious and always knows how to make me smile. I talk to him every school day and it is one of my favorite times of the day. He invited me to be in his Christmas parade and I showed up. It was a spectacular experience! He has some wonderful stories, including visiting sick children in the hospitals as Santa. Mr. Fuchs is always willing to give service to others, no matter how big the act may be! Mr. Fuchs is always able to tell when I am struggling and he helps me get through it. The best part about him is that he will get you through things not over things. Mr. Fuchs provides conversation and other skills to help me easily feel better. He is truly an amazing support system in our school.
Mrs. Rothe
I go to Mrs. Rothe’s classroom every morning before school and have the best conversations with everyone there. She gives amazing hugs and always has uplifting advice. Her comforting space is why I want to attend school every day. Since I met her, Mrs. Rothe has been everything to me. She has helped me realize things about myself that have positively impacted my personal growth. I will always remember the time I was struggling with something in my life outside of school and Mrs. Rothe noticed how my attitude had changed right away. We talked about my situation for a bit and it instantly made me feel better. I will always love and thank her for everything.
Hailey Wuerl
I consider Hailey to be one of my closest friends. We only met a couple of months ago, but she has impacted my life so greatly; I can’t wait to see her every day. She is an excellent listener and will give amazing advice! When she is overwhelmed or feeling down, she uses skills to overcome that. Hailey walks the halls with a smile on her face every day. Just an exciting tone of voice can change someone’s day, and Hailey offers that to others consistently. Although I will be sad to see her graduate in the spring, I know she will continue to do such great things in the future!
Mason Hummer
Mason is a devoted student here at BC, whether it comes to extracurriculars, sports, academics, or friendships. I met him one morning through Mrs. Rothe. Since then, he has offered spectacular advice and support to me. If I have a problem going on in my life, Mason is somebody who I know I can reach out to and trust. Due to our relationship, I have gotten closer to Christ and started to notice more of the positives in my life. I will never forget the time I texted him about something that was bothering me, he wanted me to talk about it but I told him “It’s a long story” and he responded saying, “I got time.” Those three words made me feel so reassured that he would hear me and understand. I will never be able to thank him enough for all he has done for me.
Becca Graves
Becca is one of my best friends. We were on the golf team together in the fall and went to Homecoming together at the start of the year. She has always been there to make me smile and laugh. She motivates me on the golf course and everywhere else in life. We went on a trip together last summer and when we were on the flight back home, we had nothing to do. We shared some stories and I explained some of my personal experiences through tears. It was the most amazing discussion I’ve ever had. After I had told her, she gave me a long hug and we talked about it. The important thing about this moment to me is that I had never told anyone about that before, and it felt great to be able to talk to someone about it. Becca is always there for me and will be there for you!
