BC TYRO has shown significant growth at Brookfield Central over the past 8-9 years. The club focuses on student publications such as video productions, podcasts, and articles, and has built up a number of achievements over time. Along with these achievements is the BC TYRO Instagram account gaining over two hundred followers since 2021. TYRO has also received collaboration requests from the Brookfield government, Student Council, and the Yearbook committee.
Now, TYRO may not have as many members as a larger club like Best Buddies or Key Club, but its strengths lie in its 33 active reporters and editors. A slew of new members have joined TYRO in the past few years, double the number of members in 2020. The members constantly produce quality articles and productions in a timely manner, with a variety of topics.
In an interview with editor-in-chief Jacob Smith (‘25), he reflected on his past years in TYRO: “I think that we’ve had a major growth spurt in our social media, along with generating more video productions and interviews.” Praising the remarkable growth of TYRO in recent years, he also believes that TYRO can keep growing, recruiting more members and expanding the diversity of productions. When asked what one piece of advice he would give to aspiring members of TYRO, Jacob advised to “apply yourself, don’t be afraid to try something new in the club, this is the time to experiment.”
The “Lancer Unsheathed” series has been a highlight of the club’s publications, spanning over the past couple years, and this school year being spearheaded by Jacob Smith (‘25) and Sid Rane (‘25). Students have conducted interviews with BC staff, such as Mr. Gruetzmacher, the assistant principals, and teachers–both experienced and new. The series has gained over 98,000 views since 2024, and has been showcased on the Monday morning announcements. Along with this series, there are several other podcasts and videos showcased on the BC TYRO website.
Unique from the rest of Brookfield Central’s clubs, TYRO allows students to truly take the reins of their creativity and express themselves through writing, productions, and publishing. It has certainly shown its exceptional growth with a menagerie of student productions and will continue to grow in the years to come.
