Spring break has always been my favorite time of the year. Ever since I was little, my family and I would go on a week-long venture to Perdido Key, FL. Though, some families never get to experience a fun trip like I do,which makes me extremely grateful for this opportunity! If you want to take your first, or next, great vacation but don’t know where to go, these are my recommendations that I consider to be overlooked:
In state:
If you are looking for a semi-local, quick trip, these spots are perfect for you! Some of these spots have contributed to a good portion of my youth.
Little Amerricka
This 1950s-style Amusement Park offers family-friendly fun for everyone! I remember visiting this park when I was very young with my Aunt and Uncle. I can say that it is certainly worth spending a couple of hours there. Mad Mouse was always my favorite ride growing up, as it offers quick thrilling twists and turns.
Paine Art Center and Gardens
This English-inspired estate includes a botanical garden along with an art-filled building. This scene is perfect for visiting in spring, showcasing outdoor fountains, flowers, and beautiful arches.
Circus World
This treasured event opened on July 1, 1959, and now covers over 64 acres of extravagant land. It runs through the spring and summer and features original circus acts, such as performances under the big top, using large animals you won’t find anywhere else. It truly is a magical experience.
National:
It’s no surprise that the United States has many beautiful destinations, though some are quite unknown and underappreciated. The places listed are the destinations I’ve undeniably felt the happiest in.
Gulf Coast
My favorite place on this planet is Key West, Florida. It displays the well-known southernmost point, the butterfly conservatory, and multiple other stunning sights. You’ve never witnessed a breath-taking sunset until you’ve watched the sky illuminated in all shades of the rainbow from a Key West beach.
South Dakota
Many are unaware of how wonderful this random state is. There is so much beauty to explore at Mount Rushmore, Sylvan Lake, and my favorite, The Wildlife Loop. I traveled to SD this past October and it was the most peaceful trip I’ve ever taken. It is extremely quiet and exposes some of the Earth’s prettiest natural creations.
Washington D.C.
A common misconception about D.C. is that it consists of old politicians with a boring vibe. That is completely untrue! I spent a week there this summer and had the time of my life. The history I learned was eye-opening and I saw amazing art and met even better people. Overall: 10/10, I would recommend it!
Chicago
This city is extremely overlooked! I have heard many people explain that they don’t want to visit due to how dirty they believe it to be. I went all over Chicago this summer, it was very clean, very safe, and VERY fun! There are restaurants everywhere, spectacular museums, and beautiful bridges.
International:
These countries are often underappreciated, leaving lots of secret treasures unseen to many people. If you are planning to visit a new area and want to use that passport of yours, these destinations will meet your high expectations and astonish you!
The Bahamas
Scott Kelly, a NASA Astronaut, labeled The Bahamas as “the most beautiful place from space”, as it has pristine white sand beaches and gloriously clear waters. These stunning waters very rarely drop below 72 degrees, averaging at 75 in winter, and 88 in summer. The Bahamas is often recognized for its Pig Beach, where you can actually swim with pigs! And with a palette of royal turquoise waters where you can see the ocean bed, this tropical paradise sure stands out!
Portugal
This is the oldest nation-state of Europe and the world’s largest cork producer. You won’t be disappointed with any of the views in Portugal. Ranging from colorful homes, antique architecture, mind-blowing rock formations, and unique flowers, you will be amazed by how much there is to see!
Iceland
If you look at any picture of Iceland, it is likely that you can see the northern lights. This country has a 99.96% renewable energy supply, which is mainly produced by geothermal energy. Iceland consists of natural wonders like magnificent glaciers, hot springs, lava fields, waterfalls, and ice caves to explore!
Colombia
This destination is known to be the second most biodiverse country in the world. It includes more species of birds than all of Europe and North America combined! Colombia offers a rich cultural mix of vibrant and engaging sites that will connect you to the community.
Cuba
This is a living museum for classic cars, filled with tons of colorful Cadillacs and other remarkable brands. Cuba is a pastel palette of geometric buildings. Along with the more modern designs, there is a wide variety of natural habitats including misty jungles!
