The boys swim team pulled off an incredible season, thanks to both athletes and coaches. They took first place at sectionals, and third at state. The team is composed of freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors from both Brookfield Central and Brookfield East high schools. Many of them swim for Elmbrook Swim Club, a local club that is nationally recognized as top tier for swimmers.
Many of the swimmers on the team recognized that team culture was what brought them together for such a successful season. According to Owen Prescott, an East swimmer, “All 3 of our championship meets were highlights, not just because we had stellar performances, but because the support and community this team has built up wasn’t just seen, it could be felt in every moment.” One swimmer, Benjamin Lu, tied this to their team bonding activities throughout the season. “We have many team bonding activities throughout the season, including carbo crams, team dinners, and sleepovers. Our team culture has always been incredibly close and we aim to continue this.” Swim has difficulty being a team sport, because you have to race individually, so the fact that the team could support each other like this meant a lot to many. “This team environment is unmatched. The guys on this team aren’t just my friends; many are like brothers to me. I can guarantee it will be difficult to find a group as fun and supportive as these guys” – Owen Prescott. With many of the seniors leaving, the juniors and sophomores hope to keep the team environment up for the incoming freshman so they can feel that same team spirit as this season.
The team had some incredible seniors that made a lasting impact on the program, and even the freshmen recognized that, with one saying “I thought we had a great group of seniors this year…I really looked up to Sully and Griffith, as well as Nish even though he is a junior.” Many of the seniors will be sad to leave, but they know they’re leaving the team in the hands of capable juniors. One senior stated, “It’s crazy to think that our current group of seniors are graduating and that we only have one year left of high school. I am partly excited to be a senior but it is nerve-wracking to think that soon we will be in college.” They send their luck to seniors who will be swimming in college, and moving forward with their goals.
The track record of this team has been climbing, with state, sectional, and national level swimmers entering the program and giving the team the boost it needed. By taking first place at sectionals with 347 points, they won for the third consecutive year in the row. Moving on to state, it was a tough race, but Middleton and Verona, respectively, beat them out for first. Third place in Division One is an incredible achievement, and all those on the team should be proud. Good luck for next year!
