However, in the REAL world, 77% of devices currently have some form of AI, and the beOn November 30, 2022, ChatGPT was introduced to the world. AI was something that was brought up only in the movies, usually taking over the world or everything would end as a robot.lief that AI is the most significant technological development since electricity, according to Ross Simmonds at National University. AI was bound to end up in school in some way, shape, or form; some use it as a way to cheat, while others use it for the right reasons.
AI can be helpful in school. It personalizes learning by helping students understand lessons at their own pace, provides extra practice when needed, and helps teachers save time by making in-class activities and grading. In addition, tools like text-to-speech, writing assistants, and translation apps make school more accessible, helping students who learn differently or speak a different language. As mentioned by the University of Illinois, “AI can be used to inspire and foster creativity, lend multiple perspectives, summarize existing materials, generate and reinforce lesson plans, and stimulate image creation.”
However, AI does come with many possible downsides. It can make cheating more accessible, and when relying on it too much, it can prevent students from actually learning something in a class. AI is not always the most accurate; consequently, when the answers AI gives are wrong, it can cause confusion. Moreover, there are many privacy concerns; AI tools usually collect data on students’ performance and habits. As highlighted by the University of San Diego, “Access to AI tools often depends on a school or district’s financial resources. Without deliberate intervention, this technology can widen existing inequalities between well-funded and under-resourced communities.” AI has the potential to cause more problems than it solves; it is critical to use Artificial Intelligence in a smart way.
AI isn’t all good or all bad. Most students should think of it as a tool; they just need to use it wisely. It can help you learn and save time, but it shouldn’t think for students. At the end of the day, AI can’t take your math test for you; however, it can provide resources to help you study.
