After a killer season from the girls soccer team last spring, there are high expectations for the boys this fall. In the past, they haven’t had the best track record. It’s been a victory when they win a singular game. (Or for JV, it’s been a victory to get close to winning). But this year, something seems to be in the air.
The boys began the season by winning against their alumni in a preseason matchup, a result that hasn’t happened since the last time the boys went to state. This stroke of good luck seems to have continued. As one player put it “In around half the games we have had, we have more goals than last year, and already have double the wins as last year.” Even though they’ve “made mistakes that have been crucial to our record,” the group has “bounced back” and kept their season running. Part of it is due to Coach Makal, who led the girls to their victory in the spring. Another part is due to their focus and commitment to the “team first” mentality. As one freshman put it, “the best part of being on the team is knowing you are included, and doing all the fun things with the team such as the bus, carb crams, and the environment at games.” The seniors are dedicated to this as well: “being able to play with some of my best friends one last time means a lot and is very important to me. Making memories with everyone is the best part about being on this team.” Arguably, moral and teamwork is the most critical component to soccer, and the Brookfield Central boys seem to be placing it at a top priority.
As far as where the season might go for these hard-working players, they have some incredibly high hopes, matching the way their season has begun. One player said, “I want to win state. I really believe with the team we have, we can be really penetrating on the attack, and still not allow goals on defense.” And between the support they’ve had, the hard work they’ve put in (beginning training in the summer and practice multiple times a week), Mr. Makal’s excellent coaching experience, and the camaraderie of the boys, they have a clear, possible goal. Good luck to the Brookfield Central Varsity Boys Soccer team!
