‘Carol’ earned six Oscar nominations this year, including Best Actress in a Leading Role for Cate Blanchett.

This year was memorable for the box office. Movies like Age of Ultron, Jurassic World, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens caused 2015 to be one of the highest-grossing years for movies of all time. In addition to many blockbuster hits, there were also a number of critically acclaimed films – so many, that the picks for the Oscars this year will be a tough choice.

On Sunday, January 10, the 73rd Annual Golden Globes Awards aired, which began the award season for movies. The category for best actress is perhaps the most competitive of all this year, which includes actresses like Cate Blanchett and Jennifer Lawrence. As for best actor, all the talk is about Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant. Perhaps he will finally get the Oscar that he deserves?

Now, if you’re looking for some films to watch and maybe catch up on before the Oscars, I have a few suggestions. One you must see is Mad Max: Fury Road. Don’t like action movies? This one is not like the rest. Combined with great acting and gravity-defying stunts, the film itself redefines what it is to be a post-apocalyptic movie. With its bright, saturated world and wonderful characters, this movie stole my heart within the first ten minutes. Another great film this year was The Martian. Not only were the visual effects great, but the humor mixed with suspense was a perfect combination. Matt Damon is brilliant in this space odyssey film, and he won the Golden Globe for his role, so keep an eye on him during the Oscars! Carol, a film about a 1950’s forbidden love, is another must-see. Todd Haynes, the director, takes viewers on a close journey with the characters.

Also, if you have been living under a rock the past few weeks, you might not have noticed all the Star Wars buzz. It would be impossible to write an article about 2015 movies without mentioning one of the biggest movies of the year. As the seventh installment premieres, new and old fans alike are returning to theaters to watch the story continue. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is set to beat out Avatar as the highest grossing movie of all time. Despite the fact that it is a blockbuster film and has made millions of dollars, it still has a heart to it, unlike many franchised movies made in Hollywood nowadays. Star Wars: The Force Awakens  holds the nostalgia of the past movies while creating a fresh and interesting story with a new golden trio. Whether or not it receives a nomination, it is clearly one of the best films of 2015.

Looking back, 2015 was perhaps one of the greatest years for film. The movie-making industry set records and pushed boundaries while enticing audiences of all kinds. Here’s to 2016!
