On November 4th, 2025, our nation held its Election Day, where voters in many states across the country ventured to their local polling stations and cast their ballots for governor, senators, and referenda. In states like Virginia, New Jersey, California, New York, and Texas, polls were open until late at night before the votes were to be counted, and winners were predicted. One major takeaway from this Election was that Democrats were winning in most of these ballots. Over the course of the night, it became clearer that there was a theme of the majority of voters voting for left-leaning candidates and the referendum.
In Virginia, moderate candidate Abigail Spanberger’s gubernatorial campaign ended in the highest left-leaning turnout in Virginia’s recent history. Spanberge, being a former CIA agent, retired from being a Representative for Virginia’s 7th Congressional District before refocusing on the race to win the Governor for her state. A country that contributed to her win was Loudoun County – a massive suburban county that earned her 64% of its votes (which was higher than any other democratic win in the past). Other votes worked in her favor due to the large number of federal workers in Virginia, who yearned for a better solution to their unemployment than at present. Spanberger also holds the title of the first-ever female Virginian Governor.
In New Jersey, another moderate, like Abigail, Mikie Sherill, ended the streak of Republican wins. Despite her favored candidate, Ciattarelli, backed by President Trump, who gained all the necessary publicity, the data just worked in Mikie’s favor. Sherill won 64% of the Latino voters, 91% of the African American Voters, and 58% of the Moderates. While Ciattarelli won on issues like taxes, Sherill’s lead in all other categories guaranteed her the win.
In New York, possibly the most surprising outcome of this Election, the Democratic Socialist Zohran Mandani crushed his opponents in what was predicted to be a very competitive mayoral race. Mamdani has twice beaten his Republican opponent, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (in the Primary, and then in the General Election. Mamdani will also be the first Muslim mayor of New York. He gained a massive following because of the growing demand for a fresh face in New York politics and his new ideas surrounding affordability for the American homeowner. Nevertheless, there are skeptics in the midst who wonder if Mandani can actually deliver on affordable housing in NY, but if done, it would be a massive success for the city.
It may seem like the only thing that these winning candidates had in common was their ideologies, but in all of their campaigns, there was also one simple central message: affordability. They all made it central to their work that they were dedicated to solving the problem of healthcare affordability and housing affordability for American patients and homeowners.
In California, voters voted to pass the referendum to boost the Democratic party’s chances of taking control of the House through redistricting. The redistricting would create 5 more Democratic favorable districts. These redistrictings would also be favorable since there are rumors that Gov. Gavin Newsom of California is thinking of putting his name on the 2028 ballot, a move that would certainly be helped by the new redistribution.
With the radical shift in voters in these general elections leave voters and families are left wondering: Are the Tides swaying? With the 2028 Presidential election looming, the tension is high as both sides wish to remain in power and keep a grasp on the power that they do possess. As the clock ticks down, only the American voters will decide what ideologies the country stands for, and what will happen.
