It isn’t often that there is an undisputed greatest. However, Jane Hedengren has left her mark on high school distance running. She had one of the most impressive displays of skill and talent during her senior year of high school, setting nine all time high school national records. Now, she is continuing her career at BYU where she is already making waves by setting a collegiate record her freshman year.
Jane Hedengren attended Timpview High School in Provo, Utah, where she dominated in both cross country and track. During cross country, she not only won Nike Cross Country Nationals, but broke the course record set in 2018 by Katelyn Tuohy. Along with this, she also ran a very impressive 5k in 15:50 at Nike Cross Country Regionals. However, her senior track season was even more impressive. At Nike Indoor Nationals, she set the indoor 5k record, and the indoor mile record with 15:13 and 4:26. These numbers are truly outstanding and no high school girl has come close to these times. Her outdoor season was where she truly showed her excellence in the sport when she broke six more national records. The 1600, mile, 3,000, 3200, 2 mile, and 5k records were all broken by her in 2025. The mile and 2 mile records were set just three days apart from each other at the Hoka Festival of Miles and the Brooks PR Invitational. Her high school career was phenomenal and she was awarded the 2024-2025 Gatorade National Girls Track and Field Player of the Year and the 2024-2025 Best Female Player of the Year. This means that she was deemed the best female athlete in all of high school across 12 sports for 2025.
She then committed to BYU in August of 2024 and started attending in 2025. Although she is just a freshman, she is already one of the best collegiate runners in the country. She broke multiple course records and won ¾ races she competed in. She was a very big contender for the NCAA Cross Country Championships, but she placed second just behind senior Doris Lemngole. As a true freshman, this is fantastic. We are in the midst of her indoor track season and she is already performing amazingly. She just recently ran 14:44 in the 5k at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener breaking the NCAA 5k record. She is also doing very well for herself in the mile and the 3000.
Her dominance in the sport is unprecedented. Her high school record breaking success is clearly carrying over to success in college and she will continue to get better.
