Doubles partners Lizzie Peterson (‘18) and Elianne del Campo (‘20) fist bump each other after playing out a good point.

The Varsity Girls Tennis Team ended a great season with 3 members competing at the State Championship this past weekend. Two weeks ago, Sasha Semina (‘12) at No. 1 Singles and Elianne del Campo (‘10)Lizzie Peterson (‘12) at No. 1 Doubles started off their great postseason run at Sub Sectionals by clinching wins against various teams, earning an advancement to the State Tournament.

Over the past 36 years of coaching under David Steinbach, girls from the team have qualified for state every single year, a unique and proud accomplishment for our school, as well as Coach Steinbach. The tournament, as usual was held at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, WI, home of Badgers men’s and women’s tennis teams. Semina, Peterson, and del Campo left for the 3 day tournament on the morning of Thursday October 12.

For Semina & del Campo, this experience wasn’t too new as they’d qualified for state in previous years, but for Peterson, this was a special experience since it was her first time qualifying. “As soon as I walked into Nielsen I knew it was a different atmosphere than any other match; everyone playing had a sense of urgency. When I got on the I got on the court, it seemed even bigger than it looked! It was a little intimidating, but overall a great experience,” says Peterson.

The girls played very well overall and Semina at #1 Singles took 8th in the State! “Going to state is always an amazing experience,” says del Campo. “I loved every moment of it. It was great spending time with the coaches, with Lizzie, and with Sasha. I can’t believe [the] season is over, and I’m really looking forward to next year!”
