Spring sports are off, and girls’ soccer is set up for another exciting season. After a bit of a chaotic start with multiple games being canceled or rescheduled due to tornadoes and bad weather, the players are back in the groove and ready to take on any challenges that come their way.
Last year, the BCHS Varsity Girls Soccer Team started the season ranked 4th and ended up winning the Division 2 State Title with a score of 2-1 over Pewaukee, who were ranked 1st. Six games into the season this year, the team is at 4 wins and 2 losses, which matches their win-loss record through six games last year.
I had the chance to talk to Captains Dylan Romero and Bre Delisle about what lies ahead for the team. When asked her thoughts about getting back to state this year, Romero stated, “We, of course, really want to get back to state… we don’t want to get ahead of ourselves and have been focusing one game at a time. I think if we continue to push ourselves in training and play better every game, we have the potential to compete against every team.” Delisle agreed with Romero, saying the team is focusing on playing one game at a time, but added that the team has been “trying out some new things this year.”
Again, Romero and Delisle agreed when asked about what they think the team’s greatest strength is: the chemistry they have together. Delisle said, “Everyone covers for each other and works hard for each other, whether it’s making an extra run or getting back on defense.” Many of the players on varsity have played together throughout high school and even before that on club teams. The players know each other on and off the field, and the strong bonds they have made the team that much stronger.
Any team that has won state would admit that the following season is harsh. “The biggest obstacle, in my opinion, is the pressure we have coming off of winning state last year. There are a lot of expectations that we will have success again this year, so it can be hard to shut that out and focus on the team,” Delisle explained. “As a team, we have talked about not looking ahead and just focusing on where we are now, taking it one game at a time, and getting better every day.” Romero also emphasized how hard they’re working to overcome the pressure: “We know what we are capable of, but it’s up to us to continue to work towards getting better and delivering every game.”
These girls are working hard to climb their way back to the state championship, where every Lancer is rooting for them to be.
