The Oscars are a monumental part of the awards season, and also signify its end cycle. From Shakespearean tragedies to race car drivers and world-acclaimed ping pong competitions, this year’s cycle has had no shortage of interesting and captivating films offered to audiences.
This year’s Oscar’s had some similarities to last year’s show, mainly with Conan O’Brien hosting, but there were other surprises like Emma Stone being nominated for Best Actress the second year in a row for Bugonia, and interestingly timed speech cutoffs from the TV crews. Meanwhile, the differences included Sinners garnering the most Oscar nominations to date for a film, Best Casting being introduced as a category, and Best Song nominations having performances again. Miles Caton as well as the Sinners cast and well-known artists delivered a spellbinding live performance of “I Lied To You,” and the cast of Kpop Demon Hunters performed “Golden,” as opposed to last year, which held no musical performances representing the songs nominated for Best Original Song.
Despite Sinners being nominated the most out of any film ever at the Oscars and being favored to win most of them, the winners for the categories were pretty well distributed. Best Picture went to One Battle After Another, a film about American revolutionaries in the modern day starring Leonardo DiCaprio. One Battle After Another notably also won Best Director (Paul Thomas Anderson) and Best Supporting Actor (Sean Penn). Sinners ended up winning Best Leading Actor (Michael B. Jordan), Original Score (Ludwig Goransson), as well as Screenplay and Cinematography. Lastly for the bigger awards, Jessie Buckley won the Best Actress Award for her role in Hamnet, the only Oscar for the underdog indie film out of its eight nominations.
