As the months progress and the winter gets colder, the school year begins to get into full spin with various sporting, school spirit, and club activities. One of those activities is Trunk or Treat. Trunk or Treat has been an ongoing Brookfield Central tradition for five years now, with increasing turnout of both trick-or-treaters and BC clubs. The event consists of BC’s clubs and sports congregating on a chilly October Saturday afternoon to decorate their car trunks and hand out candy to dressed-up kids.
This year a record number of clubs and kids showed up, with the child turnout at about 400 compared to last years’ reported attendance of 317. Among the clubs with trunks were Distinguished Young Women, Science Bowl, Key Club, Yearbook Club, PAWS, of course TYRO, and many, many more. The BC Student Council also hosted games and activities for the visiting kids to partake in when they weren’t busy collecting candy. The Student Council also hosts Trunk or Treat, one of the many Stuco-led events during the year. When asked for his opinion on the success of this year’s Trunk or Treat, Stuco advisor Mr. Dapelo said that he felt that it had been “definitely another successful year of Trunk or Treat.”
One of the standout trunks of the afternoon was True Blue Acapella (TBA), a student-led acapella group. The group used the unique opportunity to showcase their vocals with performances of “Monster Mash,” “Thriller,” “Man in the Mirror,” and one of their competition pieces, “Music For A Sushi Restaurant,” which all drew large crowds to the trunk. Since this was TBA’s second time performing publicly, I asked a few members how they had felt performing, as the group plans to compete in regional competitions for the first time this year. Lauren Lippe (‘28) reported that the group was feeling “a little bit nervous, but we put a lot of time into our pieces and we are confident that we will do our best.” Similarly, a few anonymous members were feeling stressed but overall pretty good about their performances.
Another lesser known aspect of Trunk or Treat is the trunk decorating competition. Some top contenders for the prize were BC Girls Volleyball with an elaborate Candyland setup complete with lots of balloons, True Blue Acapella with a Cookie Monster-themed trunk, and GSA with a colorful Mario Kart trunk. The results are to be announced.
Overall, Trunk or Treat was a way for many BC clubs and organizations to showcase their presence at BC and support for the local community.
