The Golden Globes is one of the most significant awards ceremonies in Hollywood. It presents awards to both movies and television made over the previous year, similar to the SAG Awards and Critics Choice Awards.
The event premiered on January 11th at 7:00, being the 83rd year of the ceremony, and was hosted by professional comedian Nikki Glaser, who had also hosted the previous year. Glaser’s jokes received many laughs both from the Hollywood and general public audience. A few notable moments of the ceremony included the appearance of Heated Rivalry stars Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams, Glaser performing a Marty Supreme-themed rendition of Golden from Kpop Demon Hunters, and a heartfelt quiet tribute to Rob Reiner.
Both Adolescence and One Battle After Another gleaned many nominations and received the most awards for their respective television and movie categories. Adolescence received 4 awards as a limited/anthology series, with Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress among them, and One Battle After Another took home 4 Golden Globes as well, with a few being Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and Best Director for a Motion Picture. The Pitt also scored Best Actor and Best Television Series – Drama, as expected after the incredibly positive receptions from the general audience. Lastly and unsurprisingly, Kpop Demon Hunters won Best Animated Movie and Best Original Song.
While there were several expected wins during the night, a few underdogs managed to come out on top for a Golden Globe. Perhaps one of the more surprising wins was Hamnet with Best Motion Picture – Drama. Hamnet grossed around $40 million worldwide after an initially limited theatrical release and still persevered to gain top honors at the ceremony. Additionally, Hamnet’s Jessie Buckley won Leading Actress in a Drama Motion Picture, putting her in a good position to score some Oscars in March. And with the Oscars not differentiating drama from comedy, it will certainly be an interesting night in Hollywood.
