Freshman Girls Volleyball finds success through teamwork

The class of 2023 has certainly made their mark in girls volleyball as they continue to dominate the court. These girls approach every match with a fierce determination and desire to win. So far this season, the Brookfield Central Girls Volleyball team has risen to the occasion countless times and obtained an unbeaten record, winning all 17 of their games. Despite tough opponents, they stand their ground and keep on passing, setting, and hitting.

However, natural talent is not the only component allowing these fierce athletes to keep their winning streak alive, as excellent coaching plays a strong role as well. Head Coach Caroline Langer played collegiate for UW Parkside and UW Whitewater and now enters her sixth season as head coach for BC girls volleyball.
Danielle Canitz (‘23), who plays libero and defense, begins her sixth year competing in the sport and recognizes the promise within this team. She says that the team “communicates well,” and agrees that much of their success is owed to Coach Caroline.

So what is the key to the team’s success? Is it the amount of practice? Parker Neumeier (‘23), a libero for the team, believes the reason lies elsewhere. She says that the best part about being on this team is “…the relationships that are continuing to develop between me and my teammates, since we’re all such a tight-knit group. We know to pick each other up and push through adversity in matches, which is why we’re as successful as we are.”

She enjoys playing volleyball and says that the team connects in many ways that help them play their best during games. “Outside of practices and games,” she says, “we have a lot of bonding opportunities through the carbo-crams and team sleepovers, which are always a lot of fun. Something that our team has that not a lot of others do is that we’re all friends with each other.” This, she explains, is one of the biggest factors that contributes their success. “It helps out playing because we’re comfortable with who we’re playing next to and we know each other’s strengths and how to use them.”

The freshman girls volleyball team will have plenty more upcoming opportunities in the season to continue to showcase their skills on the court. There is much more to a team than practicing and skills. These girls have proven, again and again, the power of teamwork.
